Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease: The Overlap Doctors Miss
Widespread pain and fatigue with no clear cause? Chronic Lyme disease is often mistaken for fibromyalgia. Learn the overlap and how to get tested in Newport Beach.
The Problem
When “Fibromyalgia” Is the Only Answer You’ve Been Given
Fibromyalgia is often a diagnosis of exclusion — given after other conditions have been ruled out, based on widespread pain, fatigue, and tenderness with no clear structural or lab-based cause. That same pattern — real, disabling symptoms with normal-looking labs — is also a hallmark of chronic Lyme disease. Because Lyme is frequently missed by standard testing, it’s possible to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia when an underlying tick-borne infection was never actually ruled out.
Symptom Comparison
The Symptom Overlap
Fibromyalgia and chronic Lyme disease share an extensive list of symptoms: widespread musculoskeletal pain, profound fatigue, sleep disturbance, brain fog, and heightened pain sensitivity. This overlap is significant enough that some patients cycle through a fibromyalgia diagnosis for years without anyone testing specifically — and sensitively enough — for tick-borne illness.

The Diagnostic Gap
Why This Gets Missed
Two gaps commonly contribute:
Fibromyalgia’s diagnostic criteria don’t require ruling out infection.
It’s based on symptom patterns and exclusion of certain other conditions — Lyme disease isn’t always part of that workup, especially without a known tick bite or rash.
Standard Lyme testing often isn’t sensitive enough.
Western blot and standard ELISA often fail to catch early-stage or persistent infection, so even when Lyme is considered, a negative standard test can close the door on it prematurely.
At Newport Integrative, we use the TickBorne Complete panel — combining PCR and antibody testing — designed to catch both early and late-stage infection that standard testing misses.
What This Means
What This Might Mean for You
This isn’t a claim that fibromyalgia doesn’t exist or isn’t real — it absolutely is. It’s a recommendation that if you’ve been told “it’s fibromyalgia” without ever having a sensitive tick-borne panel run, it’s worth closing that gap, especially if your symptoms started after a flu-like illness or haven’t responded to typical fibromyalgia management.
